Yankees outfielder Mike Tauchman has had a storybook season that appears to be ending unceremoniously after the 28-year-old exited Sunday night’s game in Boston early with a calf injury.

Tauchman was sent home following the injury and had an MRI in New York that revealed a Grade 2 calf strain that is projected to keep him out for 6-8 weeks.

Not enough good things can be said for how good and important Mike Tauchman was for the 2019 New York Yankees. If this is the end of his season, which it likely is, he finishes with a triple-slash line of .277/.361/.504 (128 wRC+) with 13 homers in 87 games (296 PA). The defensive metrics also favored him tremendously. He had been awesome.

With that said, if the rest of the position players became healthy then there was a scenario in which Tauchman is left off the 25-man roster. Aaron Hicks has had a setback and is likely done for the year (though the Yankees have not said that) so that injury had more or less secured Tauchman’s playoff spot. Not anymore, though.

Fortunately for the Yankees, Aaron Boone said that Giancarlo Stanton will likely rejoin the team on the upcoming homestand. That is awesome because he is Giancarlo Stanton. It just became that much more important, though, that he can play left field (and play it for as full a game as possible) with Hicks and Tauchman out, forcing Gardner into the everyday center field role.

Cameron Maybin, if healthy, now probably has a secure playoff roster spot, you’d have to think. By my math, the 25th spot is now up for grabs between Tyler Wade, Clint Frazier, and, to a lesser extent, Thairo Estrada. I’d call Wade the betting favorite because of his defense and absurd speed. What a world this is. With that said, Clint Frazier will see some playing time these next few weeks and if he can get his bat hot and be good enough on defense to be just a tier below average, then I don’t see how they could justify leaving his bat off the roster, even if they gotta give him the Andujar treatment and yank him in the sixth inning for Maybin. BASEBALL!
